Scph 5501 mod chip
I myself recently purchased a SCPH-5501/NTSC-U/C PlayStation, so its my first Imported Console, which has a Mod-Chip in it, i suspect its either a Stealth or a MM3,but didnt saw it properly, it doesnt boot PAL Games without a hitch, but it shows B&W Spectrum on RCA Cables, although the board has a Crystal Installed, to fix the NTSC Color Frequency on PAL/SECAM CRTs,but only works though RGB/SCART, another Chipped console i have its a SCPH-30004R/PAL PlayStation2 which has a Messiah Chip, which boots NTSC Titles as well, and also has the Motherboard NTSC/PAL Colour Fix,so it can display the right colour frequencies, regarding of the CRT if it supports NTSC or not, so your only choice right now its a Mod-Chip, unless you want to go to the FreeMCBoot route. You´ll have to keep in mind that 90% of the CRT back in the day didn´t support Multi-Regional Encoding such as NTSC/PAL, being restricted by only one, so in order to avoid compatibility issues with the CRTs, Region Locking was imposed, but back in the day,in order to bypass this, Mod-Chips had to be used, in order to Bypass the Region Restricion, and the use of an SCART/RGB Cable for Colour Compatibility. This has worked well for other Playstations I have sold before.Click to expand.Region Restriction is only enabled on the older consoles, due to the different bands and frequencies, and video encoding - restrictions, emposed before the adoption of the HDTV,which made different formats such as NTSC/PAL/SECAM obselete, but that doesnt mean that Region Restriction isnt present nowdays,is simply less of a hassle then back in the 1980´s until 2000´s. The best way I can describe this CD player is having the best sound quality a modded Model SCPH-1001 can offer without the reliability problems of the older laser design.įor assurance, you can view my Audiogon rating under "rhing," and my eBay rating under "richard_hing." The video output from the AV Multi-Out port still operates fine. Please note that the audio output will only come through the RCA audio jacks, and not through the AV Multi-Out port after the output stage modification is performed. I was careful not to completely change the sound of the Playstation.

The best way I can describe the result of the mods is that it addresses the weaknesses of the stock unit and retains all the sonic virtues of the stock unit. You can read about other tweaks on the Audiogon discussion thread where I have posted some of my findings. I believe that with greater detail, the space around the performers is better defined. Larger, more expansive soundstage in all three dimensions. Higher level of detail while retaining the midrange warmth of the stock unit (this is really evident once the output stage capacitors have had some time to burn-in). There is greater air in the presentation and the recording venue acoustics are better conveyed with improved detail and extension of high frequencies. The sound is no longer rolled off at both frequency extremes as some have claimed with the stock Playstation. Deeper, extended and more detailed bass. Compared to a stock Model SCPH-1001, the modded Model SCPH-5501 provides: Once modded, Model SCPH-5501 sounds equal or slightly better than a modded Model SCPH-1001. These mods work well together to improve the sound.
The modifications include installing Vampire CM1F RCA chassis connectors along with a modified output stage and upgraded capacitors in the power supply. In my experience, this unit plays Redbook CDs and CD-R discs signficantly better than Model SCPH-1001.

The laser unit is more reliable and does not require manual calibration. What makes this modded player better than my modded Model SCPH-1001 is its improved laser unit design and orientation in the chassis.
However, it uses the same AKM DAC for quality analog audio output. In stock form, this is the Playstation 1 model that does not have the RCA connectors like Model SCPH-1001.
